“Pink-Slime” to be removed from some grocers’ meat departments

Yesterday ABC News reported Safeway, SUPERVALU, and Food Lion would no longer sell lean finely textured beef (LFTB), which is also known as “pink slime.” Consumer concern was one of the primary reasons the three grocery chains will discontinue its sale. Meanwhile, Walmart and Sam’s Club will offer consumers a choice by selling ground beef with or without LFTB.

According to ABC News, the following top grocery chains sell beef containing LFTB, but offer or plan to offer alternatives for consumers:

  • Ahold (Stop & Shop/Giant)
  • Walmart and Sam’s Club
  • Kroger

These grocery chains do not sell or plan to stop selling ground beef with LFTB:

  • Costco
  • Publix
  • H-E-B
  • Whole Foods
  • Top Markets
  • SUPERVALU
  • Food Lion
