Jimmy John’s Outbreak Update

In an update released on March 8, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that a total of 25 individuals infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O26 have been reported from 8 states.  Since the previous CDC update on February 24th, eleven new ill persons have been reported from Alabama, Michigan, and Ohio.  A total of nine cases have now been reported in Michigan.

Of the 24 ill persons with available information, 21 (87%) reported consuming sprouts at Jimmy John’s restaurants in the 7 days preceding illness.  Among these 24 ill persons, illness onset dates ranged from December 25, 2011 to February 15, 2012. Ill persons range in age from 9 years to 53 years old, with a median age of 26 years. Eighty-eight percent of ill persons are female. Among the 24 ill persons, 6 (25%) were hospitalized. None have developed HUS, and no deaths have been reported.

In an article published in Food Safety News on February 20, it was reported that Jimmy John’s was permanently dropping sprouts from its menus.
