Undeclared milk allergen in Walmart pastry

The FDA announced Walmart has recalled its eight-count packages of Cruller bakery pastries due to the common name of milk not being listed following sodium caseinate on the ingredient label. People with milk allergies unaware that sodium caseinate is a milk derivative may suffer serous or life-threatening allergic reactions if the recalled product is consumed.

Cruller bakery pastries, which are a ring-shaped cake similar to a donut, were distributed to Walmart stores in Puerto Rico and all US states except Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. The packaged pastry product has a UPC code of 787429847 and expiration dates of on or before Feb. 9, 2012.

The Mercury reported there has been one case of an adverse reaction due to the mislabeled product.
